Lavender - a beloved fragrance for the home

Lavender Essential Oil has many useful properties — antiseptic, topical anesthetic, sedative, insect repellant and natural solvent.  These properties, while potent and highly versatile, are not very well known.  Lavender is probably best known for its sweet fragrance.

Ultrasonic Diffuser Aromatherapy Kit by Pelindaba Lavender Farm
Bringing the fragrance of lavender to the home, workplace or indoor environment is easy and effective with our Ultrasonic Aromatherapy Diffuser Kit.

If you are unfamiliar with ultrasonic diffusers, they are a small, electrical units which use sonic technology to break apart water and essential oil into micro-particles that are dispersed throughout your environment as a fine mist.  Ultrasonic diffusers run solely on water and pure Organic Lavender Essential Oil and produce no heat, keeping the mist cool and safe to touch.

As you control the amount of essential oil added to the water (we recommend starting with 4-5 drops and adjusting to preference) and the duration the diffuser runs, it's one of the most efficient and controllable means of "fragrancing" a space.

In addition to its beloved scent, diffusing lavender essential oil into the air has some very practical benefits.  Taking advantage of lavender's aromatherapy properties, one can experience decreases in both anxiety and agitation - a particular benefit to those, adults and children alike, in stressful situations.  Running a diffuser before bedtime (and nap time!) will help promote sleep with its whisper quiet efficiency.  When plagued with a headache, an ultrasonic diffuser is an excellent tool to help relieve discomfort.

We recommended cleaning your ultrasonic diffuser periodically every few weeks to ensure proper function and long life.  Simply using our Organic Lavender Hydrosol, fill your diffuser to the max line and let it run for 30 minutes.  The subtle scent of the lavender hydrosol will fill your space as it naturally cleans the diffuser.  Wipe the interior and exterior dry after cleaning.  Additionally, the diffuser has an option to glow with slowly changing LED lights when turned on.

The efficiency and ease of use and care of our Ultrasonic Aromatherapy Diffuser Kit makes it a household favorite for many lavender lovers.

Lavender - a must-have tropical travel companion

Do you have a tropical destination in your travel plans this year?
Lavender is an ideal travel companion, particularly to places where exposure to sun and other outdoor elements are increased.  Lavender's natural antiseptic, anesthetic and insect repelling properties make it an ideal aid in the enjoyment of your vacation.

The following handcrafted Pelindaba Lavender products are tried and true musts for your next tropical getaway.

Lavender Products Perfect for Tropical Travelling

Organic Lavender Essential Oil – 100% pure – a multitude of benefits

Travel to tropical destinations often brings opportunities for adventure which sometime result in the need for a little extra self care.  With a broad range of benefits, Organic Lavender Essential Oil is akin to a first aid kit in a bottle.  In addition to its beautiful aroma, lavender essential oil is also wonderfully healing.  Apply directly to cuts, burns or abrasions for immediate topical relief.  Forget to apply your Lavender Insect Repellent?  Lavender Essential Oil will soothe insect bites or stings on contact.  With all of the excitement of vacation, you may need help falling asleep.  Organic Lavender Essential Oil naturally induces sleep so you are refreshed for your next adventure!
Helpful Tip: pick up something sticky at the airport? Lavender Essential Oil is a natural solvent, wipe away the stick with a few drops.

Organic Lavender Healing Mist – essential after sun care for your skin

Organic Lavender Healing Mist Handmade by Pelindaba Lavender Farm

Tropical locations are located closer to the equator where the sun is more intense.  Those of us not used to this type of sun exposure can easily burn even when diligent about sun protection. Organic Lavender Healing Mist is exceptionally beneficial for both healing and soothing sun burned skin.  Spray it on affected skin and feel immediate relief.  Continued application will aid in the rapid healing of your sun burn.

Lavender Insect Repellant – proven highly effective

While we enjoy tropical climates, heat and humidity can increase the number of bothersome insects who also appreciate such environments.  Our Lavender Insect Repellant is widely known for being an incredibly effective, all natural way to defend yourself against the irksome bites of mosquitoes, flies, and other insects.  There is no need for unpleasant chemicals – one can smell delightful and ward away insects concurrently.  A Pelindaba Lavender staff member’s recent trip to Kauai’s botanical gardens, notorious for mosquitoes, has again proven the powerful efficacy of our Lavender Insect Repellant.  In a tour group of twelve, all others using chemical based insect repellents, our staff member and her companion were the only two not bitten by mosquitoes.  Halfway through the Hawaiian garden tour, others in the group were commenting on this and asking if they could borrow the Lavender Insect Repellant to protect themselves.
Helpful Tip: re-application throughout continued exposure – much like sunscreen – will increase protection.

Lavender Treatment Stick – convenient, powerful care on the go

Lavender Treatment Stick Handmade by Pelindaba Lavender Farm

An all-in-one moisturizing stick packaged conveniently for travel.  Safe to take with you in your carry on, our Lavender Treatment Stick offers every benefit of Lavender Essential oil with the accompaniment of shea butter and aloe.  Particularly beneficial for moisture replenishment during long flights in recirculated air.  Moisturize sun burned skin, soothe aching joints, quench dry lips, treat puffy under eyes, soothe and treat cuts…’ll want it at hand throughout your trip.  As Chris from Eatonville so aptly points out on our website: “This is a necessity in our home as a first aid treatment for burns, itchy bug bites, bruises. Amazing and smells great!  I have bought it as gifts and am taking it to Guatemala again for my medical kit there.”
Helpful Tip: use in conjunction with Organic Lavender Healing Mist to soothe and moisturize your sunburn to help prevent peeling.

Tropical destinations are a welcomed relief from what can seem, in some parts of the world, like a never ending winter.  Make your trip even better by taking along Pelindaba Lavender staff and customer favorites.  Your sunned skin will thank you for it.

Unique Gift Idea - Lavender Wrap Bracelet

We have the privilege of working with many, talented local artisans.  Andrea Kiernan has been handcrafting lavender bead jewelry inspired by our organic lavender fields for many years.  Andrea brings us into her studio to share the process of one of her latest additions to our lavender jewelry line - the Lavender Silk Wrap Bracelet.

Handcrafting Lavender Beads Pelindaba Lavender Farm
"I craft the focal lavender bead for each wrap bracelet from molten glass bud-by-bud into a lifelike sculpted lavender flower.  Each piece is truly one-of-a-kind.  Every intricate bead is handcrafted individually using colored glass rods and a torch fueled by oxygen and propane.   I use various hand tools – tweezers, dental tools and graphite paddles to shape the beads.  The bottom of each bead is melted flat and smooth in the torch flame so that it sits flat on the wrist.

"After the lavender bead is sculpted, it is properly annealed by slowly cooling overnight in a digitally controlled kiln to ensure strength and durability.

"The cooled glass beads are paired with silk ribbons created in collaboration between myself and a very talented California-based textile artist.  Each silk ribbon is hand painted with custom color blends creating subtle gradations of hue and tone using non-toxic dyes that are steam set to preserve vibrancy and resist fading.

"The botanical details of the lavender bead are complemented by the textured leaf pattern of the button clasp closure that finishes the bracelet allowing it to be fully adjustable.  Drawing from the idea that both the lavender and the 100% pure silk ribbon share innate natural beauty, the bracelets have a peaceful feel that makes them wearable every day.  These bohemian style yoga wrap bracelets are versatile and I’ve seen customers also wear them as an anklet, or necklace.

"Each unique silk ribbon is approximately 40 inches long and will wrap around your wrist several times.  I wash the Lavender Wrap Bracelets by hand with Pelindaba’s Organic Lavender Hydrosol or a mild detergent and then lay the ribbon flat and allow it to air dry.  The ribbons can also be carefully ironed using the silk or nylon setting.

Pelindaba Lavender Farm Lavender Wrap Bracelet

"I package each Lavender Wrap Bracelet in a sachet bag filled with fragrant, organic dried lavender buds.  When not in use, simply return the silk wrap bracelet to the bag of dried lavender to infuse the silk ribbon with the sweet fragrance of Lavender Essential Oil.  When next worn, the wearer of these silk wraps will experience a subtle aromatherapy treatment.

"The miniature, sculpted flower heads are, for me, a way of preserving the fleeting excitement of the fields in full bloom so that they can be enjoyed as adornments year-round.

Organic Lavender Inspired Lavender Jewelry

"Amid all the busyness of life, take a deep breath.  Inhale the fragrance of lavender wherever you go by wearing a Lavender Silk Wrap Bracelet - the next best thing to taking a ferry ride to visit to San Juan Island's lavender fields." - Andrea Kiernan, Lavender Beads

As a fully vertically integrated model of sustainable agriculture, each step of the process of producing our lavender products occurs on our San Juan Island, WA farm.  From the beginning stages of preparing the earth for the plants, to the final step tying the ribbon that fastens our signature tags to each finished product, each step of the process is done by hand in the USA.

Each organic lavender plant is planted and nurtured by hand.  As the plants mature and begin to flower, they are hand harvested and either steam distilled on-site to extract their essential oils or hung to dry for use in our diverse product line.  Each step of this process is conducted by talented hands dedicated to their craft.

Lavender Drying and Bud Processing

Lavender Drying and Bud Processing

Dried lavender flowers from Pelindaba Lavender
During the summer months we harvest our lavender at the farm.  (Learn how to harvest your lavender at home.)  As we harvest, the bundles that are to be dried are hung upside down in our drying barn for 3 to 8 weeks depending on the temperature and humidity.  Drying lavender inside, in the dark, out of the direct sunlight helps retain its color.  The bundles are held together by rubber bands which helps to keep the bundles intact while the stalks shrink during drying.  The bundles are hung on wires using paper clips, making sure to allow enough spacing for good air circulation.

The barn windows are kept open and we run large fans during the drying process to help provide adequate air circulation and prevent mold and mildew formation.

In our production fields we cultivate two intermedia (or “French”) varieties predominantly –‘Grosso’ for dried flower bundles and especially essential oil and ‘Provence’ primarily for its buds.  (Click here for additional lavender variety suggestions.)

What exactly do we mean by buds and how do we remove them from the stalks?  One lavender stalk holds approximately 100 rice-grain-sized flower buds – each one of them opens into a tiny flower about a 1/4 inch across.  One of the many interesting things about lavender is that only about 15% of those flower blooms are in bloom at any one time.  They only bloom for about two weeks or so and then the petals will wilt and the next set of flowers bloom.  It does this completely at random, not from the bottom up or the top down.  In other words, lavender is a serial bloomer – that’s why our fields of lavender are so purple for so long during the summer months.

Stripping dried lavender buds at Pelindaba Lavender FarmStripping dried lavender buds at Pelindaba Lavender Farm

Organic Lavender Buds from Pelindaba Lavender FarmOne of the characteristics of the Provence variety is that when it is fully dry, the buds come off very easily.  This is the reason that we don’t use Provence for wreaths or other dried flower arrangements.  Early in the farm’s history, when we were processing 2,500 plants, we removed the buds by hand using a series of screens and sieves – a very labor-intensive process.  After we grew to over 6,000 plants we acquired a rotating brush tool developed in Australia.  Now with well over 25,000 plants, we simply feed the dried bundles into the spinning brushes and the buds are automatically stripped and collected below.

From here we use the dried lavender buds in a wide variety of personal care, therapeutic, household care, culinary and pet care products.  Additionally, in line with our vision to operate in accordance with the highest environmental standards, the leftover lavender stalks are used to create our Lavender Fire Starters, Lavender Sticks and Lavender Algae Inhibitors.

One of the beauties of growing lavender (of which there are certainly many) is that there is no plant waste!
